Who We Are?
I started Madison Decks Company in 2016 with my brother and our lead carpenter, Mike. Mike has been framing outdoor structures in Dane County since 2016. My brother came from commercial construction. I worked in hardscaping across Madison from Tenney Park to Shorewood Hills.
Since 2016, our deck builder Madison company has built over 170+ decks across Dane County. We are certified through TimberTech and Deckorators. We work with the City of Madison Building Inspection Division every week.
We have built decks, patio and pergolas for homeowners across Madison, from the historic Capitol Square downtown to the hillside homes of Nakoma. We have handled projects near Williamson Street on the East Side, as well as a new deck close to Camp Randall and University Avenue.

Reliable Deck Builders in Madison
We publish real pricing
A deck in Madison costs $20 to $60 per square foot installed, depending on materials. Labor is 40 to 55 percent of the total. Permits run $250 to $600. Now you know before you even call.
We know Wisconsin winters
Footings at 48 inches deep are a requirement here, not a suggestion. Helical piles exist for a reason. We build for harsh Wisconsin winters, not just for looks.
A deck is one of the strongest investments you can make.
The 2024 Cost vs. Value Report shows wood decks return 83 percent at resale. Composite returns about 68 percent. The National Association of Realtors gives new decks a joy score of 9.8 out of 10.
We handle everything
We will follow a professional process from the inspections, design, and permits to installation. One point of contact, start to finish.

Our Easy and Fast Process for Deck Building in Madison
A common complaint we hear from Madison homeowners is that contractors go silent after the initial meeting. Here is exactly what you can expect, start to finish.
- Free consultation and site visit — During this phase, we discuss your vision for the space. We measure your yard, and you get an idea of the size and layout that suits your needs.
- Custom design with 3D visualization — You see what your finished deck will look like before we touch the ground. Changes are easy at this stage.
- Itemized written estimate — Every cost broken down. Materials, labor, permits, railings — all of it on paper before you sign.
- Permit filing and coordination — We handle everything with the City of Madison. Footings must go 48 inches deep here. We know the code. We know the inspectors.
- Professional installation — Our crew builds it. Start to finish. No subcontractors, no handoffs, no confusion about who is responsible.
- Final walkthrough and inspection — You walk the deck with us. We do not close the job until you are satisfied.
How long does it take to build a deck in Madison?
Construction itself usually takes about 1 to 2 weeks for a standard deck. However, the entire process including design, permits, material ordering, and construction can take anywhere from 6 to 16 weeks. In most cases, permit approvals and material lead times take longer than the actual build.
Which Material Is Right for Your Deck?
Wisconsin winters are brutal on wood. Madison’s tough winter conditions warp it, split it, and rot it from the inside. Here is an honest comparison of what holds up in Madison:

TimberTech AZEK runs up to 30 degrees cooler underfoot than standard composite. Trex uses 95 percent recycled materials. Each brand has real strengths and real trade-offs. We will walk you through all of it during your free consultation

Madison-Specific Climate Impact on Materials:
Given the freezing winters, composite decking is an excellent choice, as it won’t warp, crack, or splinter like wood does after multiple freeze-thaw cycles.
Cedar and pressure-treated wood could be broken down further regarding maintenance schedules in Madison’s unique climate. Consider including actionable advice like, “In Madison, a cedar deck should be sealed every 2 years to protect against snow and moisture damage.”
Is composite decking worth the extra cost?
Yes. Over time, many Madison homeowners spend nearly as much maintaining a traditional wood deck as they would investing in composite decking from the start. Composite decking offers better long-term value with lower maintenance, a longer lifespan, and no need for yearly staining or sealing.
Projects from Madison Nearby Areas
Fitchburg — 480 Sq Ft Composite Deck with Pergola.
AWe replaced a rotting wood deck with a new TimberTech composite deck featuring integrated cable railings and a matching pergola. The entire 480-square-foot project was completed in just three weeks, from demolition to final inspection. The new setup gives the homeowners a durable, low-maintenance outdoor space that only needs an occasional wash to keep it looking great.
Middleton — Multi-Level Deck with Outdoor Kitchen
This project featured a custom two-level AZEK PVC deck with built-in deck lighting, a grill station, and dedicated counter space for outdoor entertaining. Because of the soil conditions on the property, the lower level was supported with helical piles for added stability and long-term performance. The outdoor kitchen was fully framed and plumbed during construction.
Verona — Ground-Level Deck with Fire Pit and Built-In Seating
A ground-level Trex composite deck with a fire pit surround and built-in bench seating on three sides. Since the deck sat less than 2 feet off the ground, the project moved faster than a typical elevated build. Trex is made with 95% recycled materials, which was important to this family and to us as well.
